On November 14, I had the opportunity to attend a performance of Cicatriz, by Kirenia Martínez, at the Municipal Auditorium of Vigo, as part of the Vigocultura program.
Cicatriz is a dance performance featuring Kirenia herself on stage, accompanied by Antón Reixa, whom we see dancing for the first time. The piece explores bodily expressiveness through Antón’s poems, making his presence on stage particularly meaningful.
The work stands as a manifesto in itself, through its strong commitment to its own thesis. Cicatriz is a daring piece that defends dance as a space of expression beyond technique, age, or body, and it does so coherently, as the inclusion it advocates is directly embodied on stage. Because of this, it succeeds: Cicatriz draws out Antón’s expressiveness and movement, despite his lack of professional dance background. His openness and Kirenia’s care in the performance are clearly perceptible. The piece fully realizes ideas that contemporary dance has explored for decades, yet which have rarely been developed professionally in Galicia.
The stage space enters into dialogue with Kirenia and Antón and, despite its simplicity, generates remarkable beauty through movement. The lighting serves a similar function. Most striking, however, is the sonic landscape, which combines diverse music, sound design, and a poem by Antón Reixa recited by Antela Cid.
Ultimately, Cicatriz is a piece that questions the very essence of dance and discovers something new and valuable. It moves the audience emotionally and, above all, invites reflection by reminding us that dance is universal and resides in every body.
