Dance / "Cicatriz"

Cicatriz is a contemporary dance piece that gives bodily form to the poem of the same name by the iconic Antón Reixa, under the choreography and direction of Kirenia M. Acosta. Three hundred verses beginning with “I WANT” explore desire and the frustration of not attaining it as driving forces of life. On stage, two sutured bodies: that of the renowned Galician artist, who begins dancing at the age of 67 after a car accident that left him in a coma, and that of a choreographer of Cuban origin whose career has been marked by injuries and resilience. Their complicity brings visibility to anti-ageism and inclusion. A final discussion invites the audience to engage in a direct dialogue with these lives marked by many sutures.

It may also be of interest to the audience that this work articulates the meeting and contrast between Kirenia Martínez’s extensive choreographic experience and Antón Reixa’s complete unfamiliarity with contemporary dance, together with his recognized 65% physical disability.

In contemporary dance, emotion is essential—above any technical virtuosity or age.
