Kirenia Danza Company presents EMIGRANTAS, the first installment in 2020 of their choreographic trilogy "The Vulnerables." This trilogy focuses on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on migrants and their network of affections. The company demonstrated its commitment to this theme through two subsequent productions: Primero la vida! in 2021, and AFECTOS in 2023, which addressed the need for a change in the current model of managing social crises. Emigrantas is a dance piece about the latest Galician diaspora with a gender perspective.
Two performers on stage experience a central issue in their generation: emigration and the return of the latest diaspora, different from previous ones but keeping the past in memory.
The latest migratory wave, indebted to the crisis, is multipolar and multicausal. In the past decade, 47,105 people between the ages of 20 and 39 left Galicia in search of more favorable work contexts. Our population pyramid has worsened, and the demographic issue is at the center of the Galician political agenda. There is an urgent need to modify the classical discourse on migrations, valid for understanding the transoceanic exoduses of the early 20th century but not the current ones.
A group of women created Emigrantas, a dance piece to portray data, statistics, experiences, intuitions, and possibilities; pieces with which to weave a danced essay on the current Galician diaspora alongside other migrant communities, inside and outside the interterritorial Galicia.
The driving force behind these Emigrantas is to reflect on the present migratory wave in collaboration with Galician communities abroad and other migrants in Galicia, to build a piece that brings us together in front of the current migratory phenomenon.
