Galician dance and poetry join forces to captivate Argentine audiences.
Galician creativity is crossing borders to continue winning over new audiences, and not exactly through the most commercial of proposals. The dance piece Cicatriz —performed by Kirenia Martínez Acosta and Antón Reixa, and directed and choreographed by Kirenia M. Acosta— has been selected to take part in the upcoming edition of the Buenos Aires International Festival (FIBA), which will be held this September 2026.¹ The Argentine event, established since 1997 as a barometer of the international performing arts avant-garde, will host the Galician production in two performances scheduled for 19 and 20 September at the Sala Cunill Cabanellas in the historic Teatro San Martín.
The significance of the project at FIBA will extend beyond the stage, as the festival will also host the presentation of the book of the same name, Cicatriz, published by Editorial Elvira in Galician, Spanish and English, further expanding the presence of this unique cultural project.
The show, directed by Cuban-Galician choreographer Kirenia Martínez Acosta, features veteran —and still provocative— poet and artist Antón Reixa on stage. The piece is built around a dramaturgy of seven hundred verses written by Reixa himself, each beginning with the word “I want”, in a journey exploring desire, set to music by Marcos Payno and Bruno Baw, with voice-overs by Antela Cid and Álex Sande.
However, one of the elements that makes Cicatriz particularly distinctive is its inclusive nature. At the age of 68, Reixa makes his dance debut, challenging age conventions in an “anti-ageist” manifesto, while also actively bringing visibility to his 65% physical disability, the result of a serious road accident in 2016.⁸ Reixa is physically integrated into the performance as a performer, turning movement and bodily difference into a powerful artistic statement.
Following its premiere in Santiago de Compostela in March 2025 and performances in Germany, Cicatriz continues its tour in Buenos Aires before travelling to the Teatro Rosalía in A Coruña in December and to Valencia in early 2027, demonstrating that life’s wounds can also lead us to dance.
